My name is Alice Murgatroyd (guess how many times a day I have to spell that over the phone!) and I live in Poole, Dorset.
I’ve got two great degrees…
MA Creative Writing (Distinction) – Southampton University
BA English with Creative Writing (1st Class Hons.) – Plymouth University
…and plenty of writing experience (view my portfolio).
It all started when I requested work experience at BH Publications. At first I sat, highlighter in hand, quietly proofreading but by the end of the week I was writing a four-page magazine editorial and off to conduct my first interview. It was that week that made me sure I wanted to be a copywriter.
I completed a Professional Writing Course at Falmouth University and kept in touch with the publishers whilst I studied for my Masters, rapidly moving onto bigger projects. It’s amazing what can develop from one week of work experience.
Word got out that there was a new copywriter in town and, once I’d graduated from Southampton, I began working as a freelance writer full time. Since then I’ve completed all kinds of projects from simple proofreads and editing jobs, all the way through to writing copy and content for magazines, catalogues, websites and correspondence. My clients range from individuals and small businesses to national marketing agencies.
I’m not just a writer…
I love writing but I can’t sit at my desk all the time. When I get away from the computer I head to the water for a walk along the beach or go dinghy sailing in Poole Harbour. I daydream of skiing holidays, camping adventures or trips to Cornwall where I grew up.
Something else that I love is music. Choirs have been part of my life since school and I’ve recently joined one that rehearses in Bournemouth. I like to think that an ear for music helps with the rhythm of my writing.
And now we’re up to date.
